Facebook brings 2000 people to anti-war protest

Today I went to a three-in-one protest calling for British troops to be withdrawn from Iraq & Afghanistan, an end to the oppression of the Palestinian people, and a pre-emptive call not to invade Iran.

The remarkable thing about the protest was that well in advance, over 2,000 people had said they would attend on Facebook's events app. A further 2,500 had said that they 'might' attend.

According to a BBC News article, police put numbers on the day at 2,000. Organisers reckon it was closer to 10,000. Both sides want to spin the figures, so it was probably somewhere in between.

It is impossible to know how many of the people who signed up on the Facebook event page actually attended. But I think it is safe to say that a large percentage of the protestors heard about the demo through Facebook. Are you using social networking tools to publicise your events?
